What does cupping feel like?
We all put the vacuum on our cheek or leg when we were kids, right? Cupping has a similar suction, but not quite so powerful, or noisy!
When the cups are first put on the skin, they may feel a little tight, but that sensation quickly subsides. Cups will be strategically placed on the body, depending on your discussion with your practitioner and then left on for about ten minutes.
Does cupping hurt?
Cupping should not hurt. There may be a little discomfort but I work with you to ensure you are comfortable and able to enjoy your cupping experience.
Does cupping bruise?
Often the cups will leave a ‘cupping mark’ on the skin where they were applied. Depending on the strength of the suction and what’s happening underneath the surface, there will most likely be a colour.
But let me clear something up. The marks left behind after a cupping session, are NOT bruises. A bruise is caused when there is blunt injury or trauma caused by broken capillaries underneath the skin. The marks left after cupping are stagnant blood, cellular debris or pathogens that are brought to the surface for the lymphatic system to clear.
The cupping mark will usually fade after about five days, but this depends on the darkness of the marks.
What can cupping treat?
- Chronic and acute pain such as back and neck pain which can lead to headaches and migraines
- Upper traps and tight shoulders (think paddling, swimming, surfing)
- Tight ITB and quads (think cycling)
- Often used for the common cold and clearing congestion
and so much more!
What are the benefits of cupping?
Like any treatment, everyone will respond differently to their cupping treatment. Cupping MAY support your body in the following ways:
- Support the body to provide relief from muscular pain and tension.
- Over time it may support the release of scar tissue and fascial adhesions and promote mobility and range of motion.
- Promote the circulation of blood and lymph through the body which may promote drainage and detoxification.
- Stimulate the whole body into relaxation response. Getting out of your sympathetic nervous system.
What should I not do after cupping?
The pores are open, so for about 12-24 hours, it is best to avoid:
- Hot showers, saunas and hot tubs
- Strong air conditioning and cold, windy conditions
- Strong exercise
Cupping is one of those modalities that have so much mystery and uncertainty surrounding it. It’s been around for thousands of years but the western world has only recently seen how awesome it is.
I was introduced to cupping during my studies and with my own history of shoulder issues, I thought I’d try cupping. After one treatment I was hooked.
Why choose Sunshine Coast Cupping?
Not only have I done extra training in both ancient fire cupping techniques with glass cups and flame but I’ve learnt the modern, fascial technique used typically with plastic cups.
I also practice what I preach and have cupping done regularly, especially for tightness through my shoulders. So, I know how cupping feels and what feels right and wrong.

How is cupping actually done?
Cupping is a treatment that sits under the Chinese Medicine umbrella and is a technique involving the use of glass cups as suction devices.
They are placed on the skin to assist in the dispersing of stagnation by drawing congested blood or energy to the surface. It is believed the skins’ pores open, stimulating blood and oxygen flow, creating an avenue for toxins to be drawn out of the body.
Glass cups are warmed using an alcohol-soaked cotton ball which is lit and then placed inside the cup and quickly removed before the cup is placed onto the skin.
The burning inside the cup removes the oxygen thus creating a vacuum. The cup is anchored to the skin via the vacuum that has been created which then pulls the skin upward as the air inside cools. Flames are not used near the skin. It is simply used for the heat that causes the suction action.
Once applied, cups are generally left in place for ten minutes. Sometimes they can be gently moved across the skin which is commonly referred to as sliding cupping.
